[vmware-player]: Could not open /dev/vmmon: No such file or directory

Posted by jaysonpryde on 2012/4/3 12:54:23
I am running on vmware player on Centos 5.8(final) 32 bit. Everytime I attempt to start an existing virtual machine, an error dialog pops saying:
"Could not open /dev/vmmon: No such file or directory ..."

I've already installed devfsd (2.4.3-12.i386.rpm) but still there is no /dev/vmmon folder.
I also followed the steps on the following link thinking that it will resolve the problem but it did not:

I searched the forum but i haven't seen any significant or relevant topic.
Hope someone has an idea on how to solve this.

Thank you!

Which vmware version are you installing? Also, provide the output of the build process when you run your "vmware-modconfig --console --install-all"

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.

There don't seem to be too many CentOS-5 users of VMware Player for the host, or at least I have not seen a lot here. Have you considered alternatives for virtualization such as VirtualBox?

I haven't considered using Virtual Box yet. Can it play existing VM images created from vmware workstation? Thank you

A qualified yes. It may take some tweaking, depending on the source VM type and configuration, but VirtualBox can certainly read and/or create .vmdk virtual disks. Try a google on vmware site:virtualbox.org for a better feel for the problems and more information.
