Authentication is required to set the network proxy used for downloading packages

64bit CentOS installed to ESXi host. The server is running Alfresco.

I have set inittab to 3 - don't want to run graphical console, but I have installed TigerVNC and TigerVNC server. Have configured /etc/sysconfig/vncservers for a single user, and have allowed non-localhost login as I am on a secure network.

However, when I try to connect to the VNC session I get an almost blank screen. That is the top menu bar (Apps, Places, System) is present, the bottom task bar is present and there is a dialog box as follows:

Title: Authenticate
Text: Authentication is required to set the network proxy used for downloading packages: An application is attempting to perform an action that requires privileges. Authentication as the super user is required to perform this function.
Prompt: Password for root:

However, I am unable to interact with the dialog or any other part of the screen as the cursor is still the spinning waiting thing and the keyboard is not letting me type into the dialog or otherwise interact. If I run "init 5" on the console I do get a GUI and that works fine.

Any ideas?
