Thanks Alan,
I added the --disablerepo and ran the command line, but of course it said that the kernel was already installed.
I ran it as an update and again got output to indicate an error, this time that it couldnt connect to an update source (of course!).

I then used reinstall and the process was successful. But on reboot to kernel-ml I still cannot access the USB adaptor. There was an error message on boot ....... mcelog daemon [failed], see below
