Hi there! I installed CentOS 6.2. Everythnig was OK but I found the problem with the sound. When I play some song and push Skype, the music stopped and Skype sound is very bad - login sound, call sound - everything. I cannot change "sound Device" - all is marked as "Pulseaudio server (local)" and cannot change it. When I remove pulseaudio the sound works fine but there is no sound options in - System - Preferences - Sound and volume control from my keyboard doesn't work. What can I do - is it possible to use alsamixer and what do I have to do? Thank you!

This seems to be the problem that's mentioned at http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Skype#head-177735ac44d30e5df3c59d6c7917d01eb8245140 . The only solution i know is to remove pulseaudio-libs.i686. Skype does work properly with pulseaudio-libs.x86_64.

Dependencies are normal. Is this on i386 or x86_64? (Try "uname -rmi" if unsure.)

YBellefeuille was referring to a 64-bit system with the 32-bit package also installed - not a situation one would normally find on CentOS-6 x86_64, which is not multi-arch by default.

uname -rmi
2.6.32-220.7.1.el6.i686 i686 i386

OK! Then I have to remove all 107 packages, right?

Hey guys! I just removed pulseaudio and install alsamixer. But now my keyboard buttons for volume control don't work. I get the nice message of "Waiting for sound system to respond" when I try open Volume Control from System-Preferences-Sounds. May be gnome-volume-control is missing. How can I use my keyboard shortcut with alsamixer and how can I see a graphic volume slider on my desktop when I adust the volume control. What do I have to do?

Wrong.

Reinstall the packages you removed. Did you not understand the distinction between an extra 32-bit package on x86_64 and the primary package on your 32-bit i386 install?

Simply reinstalling pulseaudio will not restore the rest of the 107 removed packages. If you did not preserver the list you should be able to find it in /var/log/yum.log. After restoring the packages we can then try to debug the original audio issues.

No. You should not have to remove alsa-utils which provides alsamixer:
# rpm -qa \*audio\* \*alsa\* | sort
alsa-lib-1.0.22-3.el6.i686
alsa-lib-devel-1.0.22-3.el6.i686
alsa-plugins-pulseaudio-1.0.21-3.el6.i686
alsa-utils-1.0.21-3.el6.i686
audiofile-0.2.6-11.1.el6.i686
kde-settings-pulseaudio-4.3.1-1.el6.centos.noarch
pulseaudio-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
pulseaudio-gdm-hooks-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
pulseaudio-libs-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
pulseaudio-libs-devel-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
pulseaudio-libs-glib2-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
pulseaudio-libs-zeroconf-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
pulseaudio-module-bluetooth-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
pulseaudio-module-gconf-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
pulseaudio-module-x11-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
pulseaudio-utils-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
# rpm -qf `which alsamixer`
alsa-utils-1.0.21-3.el6.i686

OK! I reinstall pulseaudio
# rpm -qa \*audio\* \*alsa\* | sort
alsa-driver-1.0.25-95.el6.i686
alsa-kmdl-2.6.32-220.el6-1.0.25-95.el6.i686
alsa-lib-1.0.22-3.el6.i686
alsamixergui-0.9.0-0.9.rc2.el6.i686
alsa-utils-1.0.21-3.el6.i686
audiofile-0.2.6-11.1.el6.i686
gnome-alsamixer-0.9.6-5.el6.i686
kmod-alsa-1.0.25-2.el6.elrepo.i686
pulseaudio-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
pulseaudio-gdm-hooks-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
pulseaudio-libs-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
pulseaudio-libs-glib2-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
pulseaudio-utils-0.9.21-13.el6.i686
python-alsa-1.0.21-1.el6.i686

# rpm -qf `which alsamixer`
alsa-utils-1.0.21-3.el6.i686

Now my microphone doesn't work again. When I change "Input source" to be "Rear mic" in Alsamixer everything is OK. But after restart the microphone doesn't work again. In System-Preferences-Sound I tried to change options in "Input" tab but doesn't matter what I change - Line in or Microphone, the microphone doesn't work.

If you have a working configuration try the alsactl options store and restore.

Did you do "alsactl store" with the working configuration as root? Did you try "alsactl restore" after the reboot?

Yes I did it but didn't run "alsactl -restore" after reboot :) Now I tried it and the microphone works fine. What do I have to do now?

Unless someone can suggest a more elegant solution, I'd try
echo "alsactl restore" >> /etc/rc.d/rc.local

I just add "alsactl restore" in System->Preferences->Startup Applications. I think this work.
