[RESOLVED] GNOME2: Switching off menu fading

Hi,

I am not very used to desktop environments in CentOS. Now I have a Gnome2 from CentOS 6.2 with acceleration and X11 "Composite" turned on. Works fine - but menus are fading in pretty long (think about 500ms) - awkward.

Did not find the secret config file to turn this off.
So far I created ~/.gtkrc-2.0 containing

gtk-menu-popup-delay = 0

It seems to be ignored, though.

Thanks,
Helge

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.

Under "System / Preferences / Desktop Effects" do you have Standard or Compiz?

Hi Phil,

I am using - and have to as a matter of fact - the Compiz - Desktop.

Mind explaining why the use of Compiz is necessary? If the performance hit is unacceptable I would be prone to use Standard, but perhaps there is something I don't know about what would require Compiz.

Hi Phil,

thanks - but I would'nt ask if software rendering would work - for certain applications (Maya; Nuke) I need it enableld. It works like a charm so far. As a Last resort I could only switch to KDE. There I can just set the fade time via Desktop Settings Preferences. I dont Wand to use KDE - this has to be possible :)

I did not think the desktop settings had any effect on rendering within applications, but I may well be wrong on that. Did you try with the Standard setting and get an error?

Hi Phil,

as I said I need compiz, please trust me in that matter. Seveal applications (including Maya) behave bad in Software-rendering mode. Compiz is best practice (I could point you to the maya manpage if you like).

So I suppose you dont know a way either?

Thanks,

I'll take your word for it - 3D rendering is not something I know much about. All I can suggest is to make sure you have the right drivers for your hardware, and if performance is still unacceptable and the budget allows for it, get better hardware.

I was playing with compiz just recently and found the default delay rather annoying too.
I'm not at the machine at the moment, but it can be fixed through gconf.
Run gconf-editor. There is apps > compiz > plugins > fade I think. You can play with the values. Possibly, disabling the plugin altogether should have similar effect. That should be somewhere in apps > compiz > general > active plugins or similar.

Hi maruska!

Thanks, this was very helpful and it worked! Since CentOS 6 gconf-editor is not part of the default install anymore. And as I said I am not at all firm with desktop'ed Linux

You're right, gconf-editor is not installed by default. I apologize, it's amongst the first things I always install. Glad it works for you.
