I'm running CentOS 6.0 (64-bit), when I try to run system-config-users from Terminal as root, I get this:



I've searched on the internet and some people suggest doing "xhost +localhost" or "xhost +" but it doesn't seem like a permanent solution.

Any help will be appreciated.

I think you can't do this way

Launch system-config-users as a normal user . Then the system will ask you for the authorization.

Here is an update. I booted into Gnome and did system-config-users in Terminal to get the same error message. (Also going through menu options don't work either. Mouse pointer changes to busy and then nothing happens.) Then I logged out of Gnome and logged back into KDE and tried the same command in Konsole but this time it worked. I typed it as normal user and I was prompted for root password (I got the authentication prompt everytime) then users info window pops up. I logged back into Gnome and yeah it works in Gnome too now. But not for long, only until a reboot is done.

Sounds like a bug. Does it work in Gnome if you start it from the GUI menu as a normal user, rather than running in a terminal?

Just tested. Everything in gnome-terminal.
As normal user, running 'system-config-users' prompts me (pop-up) for the root-password and then shows the configuration dialog.
As normal user, after running 'su -' to become root, running 'system-config-users' shows the configuration dialog.
No errors.

This issue has been occurring since Centos 6.0 with the 2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.x86_64/2.6.32-131.21.1.el6.x86_64 kernel (it is still occurring in Centos with the 6.1 2.6.32-131.21.1.el6.x86_64 kernel).

To replicate;

1. gnome-terminal
2. su root
3. open any application requiring X (eg nedit, system-config-users, etc)

Output;

No protocol specified

Nope. Just fully updated to CentOS6.1. Still works as reported in coment #6

Note this issue is likely triggered by use of Compiz/Fusion.

Other "root applications" ask for the password (as does s-c-users) -- and then run, but s-c-users just doesn't go.

When I run from commandline, I get that same error:

No Protocol Specified
system-config-users requires a currently running X server.
