I have an old version on IBM machine x86_64 architecture. I have downloaded all the .rpm files fo the version i want to install from this website.
http://centos.arcticnetwork.ca/5.7/os/x86_64/CentOS/ My question is 1. Does all the .rpm files on the web page with x86_64 suffix and noarch suffix are the one i require. 2. These are so many files, so how do i upgrade centos kernel? 3. Should i upgrade as root or the user. Thankyou very much for your answer. I would really appreciate detailed response for question no 2. |

Just to rule out any possible incompatibilities, can you post the output of
To answer your questions 1) No. You only need the things that are needed by your system. This includes existing installed packages and some added dependencies. 2) You don't upgrade it file by file. You upgrade it as a whole by using yum. 3) The system will not permit you to install/remove/upgrade any installed packages using a normal user. If your system has access to the internet, then after reading the release notes of 5.x, specially the Known Issues, you may just If you will notice in the 5.3 Know Issues, the upgrade process has been divided to multiple parts. This is to solve some problems with glibc. Though upgrading 5.6 to 5.7 is flawless just by using yum update, it is my personal choice that I use the multi step procedure in dealing with very old systems. If the box is not connected to the internet then you might want to create a local mirror repo using your downloaded rpm packages if you have already downloaded them all. Creating a local mirror repo is beneficial specially if you have a slow internet connection. If you have multiple systems it will save you bandwidth and more importantly time. |

more /proc/version Linux version 2.6.9-42.EL (buildcentos@mehak.karan.org) (gcc version 3.4.6 20060 404 (Red Hat 3.4.6-3)) #1 Tue Aug 15 09:30:48 BST 2006 So, as you can see its not 5.6 to 5.7 upgrade. I wonder if the upgrade process will be same for such an old version. Quote:
How do i know what is needed by my system between version 2.6 to 5.7? Quote:
There is no internet connection with that machine and i cannot bring that machine to the present location to have internet connection. I assume yum update fails then? Whats the procedure now? There are no multiple system either. It is just one system(server?) and no computer is attached to it. |

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.
Small wonder you are having problems. That is a very obsolete CentOS-4 kernel. There is no supported update path across major versions. A backup followed by a fresh install of CentOS-5 or CentOS-6 are the only recommended ways to get to a new major release. Moving your post to CentOS-4 General per your current version. Note that you are not trying to update from 2.6 to 5.7. The current CentOS 5.7 kernel is 2.6.18-274.18.1.el5, and CentOS 6.2 is at 2.6.32-220.4.1.el6. Also note that CentOS-4 EOL is in a matter of days. |

That's why I said your system must be upgraded using yum. Yum does this and many more for you automagically. Quote:
Yum is still the preferred method even though you don't have internet. After upgrading (the procedure stated by pschaff) you might want to practice on creating an update media. Even though your server is not connected to the harsh internet, it is still wise to update your system(s) for bug fixes. Welcome to the fora! Just wondering to my self: Man how did I ended up on the CentOS4 area.... ![]() |

Such [auto]magic does not work well across major releases. Quote:
You were magically transported here by yours truly, because the OP has CentOS-4 and started the thread in the wrong forum. That's why your head is still spinning. ![]() |

So that explains it!
BTW, can we add this in to the FAQs? I mean, the question "How do I upgrade 4 to 5, 5 to 6, and 4 to 6?". |

The wiki will answer that. Quote:
Not only the kernel but the whole installation. Quote:
It can be removed from your hard drive during the installation phase of 5.7 Quote:
The installation media ISOs are in the download page. Just select which country you are in or nearest site to your country. Quote:
You don't use yum for clean installs. I strongly advice you that you read the Installation Guide before doing anything. Also you might want to create a test server and move your data there before you wipe out the hard drive of your server. The aim for this is to test any compatibility issues specially if your server does http for the internal network. Your custom codes may not run as it did before. |

Good idea, but generalized a bit: General FAQ #24. How do I upgrade from one major release to another? |
