E.g. I have ATrpms enabled all the time, as it's the only external repo I use aside from CentOS.
No testing or bleeding.
Then I have EPEL in disabled state. I enable it only in case I need something from it. If the required package is in EPEL, fine, BUT it must not replace the CentOS one. If it does, I don't use it.


It comes down to what particular person needs. For me, ATrpms suits my needs better, for others, RPMforge is what they prefer. Both provide different stuff. And both are fine if only one is enabled all the time. E.g. Comix is only in RPMforge. :)

The main trouble with atrpms, repoforge and epel conflict seems to be with vlc. I've forgotten the details, but I worked around it, as I recall, by temporarily disabling repoforge and/or epel when installing vlc and then excluding the libraries in question when checking updates.

Aside from that, atrpms has gotten, IMHO, much better at not conflicting, and if you're doing a good deal of transcoding, then, again IMHO (and not that well informed an opinion at that) is that one is better off with the atrpm multimedia packages, especially ffmpeg.

That Wiki article could definitely use an update for CentOS-6 but is still applicable in general. I tend to stay away from ATrpms due to compatibility issues with other repos I need more, but they are probably fine if used as the only 3rd party repo, or with careful repo configuration. Please read about Installing Software, Source Installs, and Repositories, and note the warnings and advice about installing and configuring the yum priorities plugin. Non-core repos should have a higher numeric value, which is a lower priority. Lower is "better" as in golf scores.

If you encounter specific issues in getting multimedia working please post details.

Hmm, quick look at that guide makes me think it's rather out of date, at least in regards to Win32 codecs. They are more or less obsolete, current versions of mplayer can play practically everything without the need for those.
I don't know what all you need from the multimedia world, but I personally use ATrpms, not RPMForge. I used it in Fedora too, so I'm probably biased. :) Packages from ATrpms are generally later versions than those from RPMForge too. Plus, they include latest Nvidia drivers which I would otherwise have to get from ELrepo, so one less repo needed for me. But of course, RPMForge has some stuff ATrpms or any other repo doesn't have. You would have to compare them regarding your needs.
Hmm, one thing. Cinelerra, which to my knowlegde is only in ATrpms, doesn't seem to work. I tried on two systems and the gui is always completely unresponsive. Rebuilding the provided src.rpm doesn't help, same result. But compiling latest GIT (from a few days ago) against ATrpms packages works just fine. Another bug to report after the 2012 starts..
