Time to ask you to provide more information about your system by running "./getinfo.sh" and showing us the output file.

Chances are that your system is no longer true CentOS. The elastix pages have a section about 'Converting from a CentOS system' (in Downloads/Extra), even though it claims to be CentOS-based itself.
So any advice you are given here may not be applicable.

Well that's either indicative of the problem or, you have /var as a separate filesystem and it isn't mounted. Check /etc/fstab for a line that would mount /var and if it exists, mount that on /mnt/sysimage/var (or where ever the correct location is).

Look in the log files in /var/log to see if any of them give a clue about what the real cause of the problem is.

See the Wiki article Resetting a Forgotten Root Password.

LOL! what has it got to do with password recovery.... ? as i said earlier, centos accepts login credentials, logs in, then immediately logs out .. no matter whichsoever user you use you get the same result!!! :(

Is this via SSH? Can you log on at the console? As root if not your user?

If nobody has a better idea, I think you'll have to drop to init 1 to get a look at the logs.

Well.. this is for both ssh and local root login on the server as well.. and it happens for all the users :(
