Hi,

I've recently installed Centos 5.7 for my first time.

I've been attempting to get a Ruby on Rails server with NGINX and MYSQL engine going. After looking at the versions that the yum packager installed, I've realized that they do not provide the newest version. After realizing this I went ahead and installed Ruby and NGINX by source (painful btw for a non linux user)!

Now I've notice that MYSQL is using a v 5.0.x when 5.5 is the newest version.

My questions:
- Is it recommended to be installing all these apps by source?
- Why does YUM not provide the newest version.
- What other tools would I need to get a Ruby on Rails server running on NGINX?
- I have a "GoDaDDY' registration setup to my server IP but is there anything else I have to do in CENTOS to get it working?
- Anything else for a noob like me to watch out for?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Eric

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature. Please particularly note the parts about Installing Software and the evils of Source Installs.

You may want to consider using CentOS-6 for newer versions, but mysql is still 5.1.52-1.el6_0.1, with later versions available in some 3rd party repos. A forum search will find threads such as this one.
