dear All,

when booting my laptop with external monitor connected by VGA cable,
the external monitor displays the " Booting from Centos ...." screen, then goes black and stays black.

I have this problem with kernel 2.6.32-279.1.1.el6.centos.plus and kernel 2.6.32-279.el6.centos.plus,
everything stil works with kernel 2.6.32-220.23.1.el6.centos.plus.

The machine sees the screen I think:

[caw@localhost ~]$ xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2560 x 1024, maximum 4096 x 4096
LVDS-1 connected 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 331mm x 207mm
1280x800 60.0*+
1024x768 59.9
800x600 59.9
640x480 59.4
720x400 59.6
640x400 60.0
640x350 59.8
VGA-1 connected 1280x1024+1280+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 338mm x 270mm
1280x1024 60.0*+ 75.0
1152x864 75.0
1024x768 75.1 70.1 60.0
832x624 74.6
800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
640x480 72.8 75.0 66.7 60.0
720x400 70.1
TV-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

I tried this with packages from ELREPO and with the Nvidia proprietary driver, even with vesa.
All with the same result.

hardware info:

description: VGA compatible controller
product: C51 [GeForce Go 6100]
vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
physical id: 5
bus info: pci@0000:00:05.0
version: a2
width: 64 bits
clock: 66MHz
capabilities: pm msi vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom
configuration: driver=nouveau latency=0
resources: irq:19 memory:fb000000-fbffffff memory:d0000000-dfffffff(prefetchable) memory:fa000000-faffffff memory:f9fe0000-f9ffffff(prefetchable)

The install is fully updated Centos6.3.

Could this be a kernel bug of is the hardware too old for Centos 6.3?

Thanks in advance for any advise.

greetings, J.

It rather looks like a bug in the latest kernels if it works with a 220 kernel, but why are you using the plus kernels, and have you tried the standard kernels?

That doesn't look like the nvidia proprietary driver to me...

hello Phil & Trevor,

thanks for the reply's !

* I assumed a had the standard kernels, but now you mention it.......must have left a non-standard repo enabled when updating.
I will try the standard kernels asap.

* after trying the ELREPO and NVIDIA drivers, I reinstalled the test machine, hence the -now nouveau -output.

greetings, James.

Dear CentOs Users,

I now tested this with standard kernel, same result for Nouveau driver.

[caw@localhost ~]$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.32-279.1.1.el6.i686 #1 SMP Tue Jul 10 12:30:45 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
[caw@localhost ~]$

Didn't test standard kernel with ELREPO or Nvidia.

Anybody else having similar isues?

greetings, J.

Which version of centos has this kernel? I am trying to build the centos on a laptop (thinkpad, lenovo t410) with a broken lcd and am using an external monitor. While installing centos I do encounter the monitor screen blanking out after a while. I am trying to install centos 6.3. My question since the there is a kernel that appears to solve the external monitor issue - which version centos should I download and install (from an install CD iso). I am assuming there is a version of centos that supports the following
SOLVED with kernel 2.6.32-279.2.1.el6.centos.plus.i686. Since I am unable to run "yum" I have to rely on an installCD with the correct version of ernel already there.
