We use CentOS : Federal Power Comission (CFE) is using CentOS 3
Posted by Unregistered Visitor on 2007/12/19 19:05:57 (10773 reads)

Hi CentOS community,

My name is Miguel Leal, I work in Comision Federal de Electricidad, the major power supplier in Mexico.
I'm glad to let you know that we are using CentOS to migrate from SCO OpenServer to Linux CentOS 3.
We have been working with SCO's OS and Liant RM-Cobol 15 years ago, having many troubles and difficulties because the poor performance delivered by SCO Openserver 5. We thoght we didn't have another choice to have a better performance but we were totally wrong!

Three years ago we were searching about how to have a better response, performance and reliability for our application. CFE is a public company, and we are engaged to have small expenses and take the best from any invest. With this goal in mind, we were searching for a technology that let us still using what we already have, and we found linux-abi to use Liant RM-Cobol for SCO. We need to have a stable OS that bring confidence, speed processing and minimum management, so we chose CentOS.

Mixing both CentOS and linux-abi patch, we have now a great solution for our needs. We have a exponential increased performance, rapid response and stable plataform, and we are still using SCO's binary programs working, all of this with almost none expense.
CFE is divided in 13 regions, we have this solution implemented in 2 of them and increasing! Many people have doubts about free software, but we are fighting to defeat all of them and have it working all along the company.

Thank you CentOS community, keep doing this and make Enterprise Computing more efficient and reliable.

Regards,

Miguel Leal

CentOS in the News : Linux Foundation 2007 Desktop Linux Survey
Posted by hughesjr on 2007/12/18 14:15:03 (13174 reads)

The Linux Foundation 2007 Desktop Linux Survey results summarizes responses from more than 20,000 desktop users. CentOS finishes as the number 6 Business Desktop and the number 8 Personal Desktop in the survey.

The CentOS Project is pleased with the CentOS adoption numbers on the Desktop, including our finish above the following Enterprise distributions in the Business Desktop category: SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED), and Mandriva. CentOS also finished ahead of these other notable distributions in the Business Desktop category: Xandros, Gentoo, Slackware, MEPIS, Knoppix, PCLinuxOS, Linspire, Freespire, Sabayon, and Mint.

In the Personal Desktop category, CentOS finished above the paid Enterprise distributions Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED), though CentOS did drop below Gentoo, Mandriva and Knoppix in this category.

Clearly the Ubuntu family is the big winner in this survey, with Red Hat also showing they are a major player on the Linux desktop as well.

Overall, we are very happy with the CentOS placement in this survey since we were not even listed in the previous 2 desktop surveys by the Linux Foundation. A big thank you to CentOS users ... lets see if we can't move into the top 5 in both categories next year .

Here are some other stories about this survey:

Survey says ... Linux desktop is ever more popular

Desktop Linux - still about freedom

CentOS.org Website News : CentOS.org turns 4 !
Posted by hughesjr on 2007/12/6 11:50:24 (9268 reads)

Happy 4th Birthday CentOS.org

Something happened on December 4th, 2003 and it went largely unnoticed in the Linux world, even by the developers at the CentOS Project. On that date, the CentOS Project registered the domain name CentOS.org.

A couple days ago also largely unnoticed by just about everyone, albeit for different reasons as we were trying to serve updates to more than 2 million CentOS machines on the release of the first update set of our 4th CentOS version, CentOS.org turned 4 years old.

It has been a wild ride from nothing to a major player in the enterprise linux world. We have gone from not rated in the top 100,000 web sites to around 15,000 in Alexa.com traffic ratings and from not rated to a consistent 10th-15th place at distrowatch.com.

The CentOS Project would like to thank all the Developers, QA Team Members, Forum Moderators, Mailing List Moderators and Translators for all their hard work in producing CentOS.

We would also like to thank Red Hat, Inc. for being true to its open source roots. It is no coincidence that there are not any Linux distributions out there like CentOS based on any of the other paid enterprise linux offerings. Red Hat, Inc. is a first class organization and Red Hat Enterprise Linux is an outstanding operating system. We wish them both continued success.

Last, but certainly not least, the CentOS Project would like to thank our users. There is not a better community anywhere in open source than the CentOS community. You are the reason that CentOS is where we are today.

It has been a wild ride to this point and will no doubt continue to be for the foreseeable future.

Happy Birthday CentOS.org ... and here is wishing you many, many more

We use CentOS : LiquidCore & Quanta upgrades their server to CentOS 5.0
Posted by fakemoth on 2007/9/22 1:40:00 (8490 reads)

LiquidCore.RO and Quanta SRL announces that our custom made server runs now the latest release of your great linux distro: we upgraded to CentOS 5.0. It was in fact more of a fresh install and restore from the backups, but talking about a server we had to carefully select the timing.

We had a few days of hardship, but everything is fine now, thanks to the incredible stability of CentOS! It was the most dramatic upgrade, mostly because we upgraded all the other frameworks/packages we use.

The main job for the server is to deliver websites, galleries and forums, mostly based on Joomla and phpBB, the e-mails with Postfix & Dovecot etc, but also to offer webhosting to our friends and a few clients. It also stands for a DNS, file and FTP server. It is not a big business but rather a non-profit one to bring the latest news, reviews, benchmarks, "how to"s in games, hardware and software to the romanian enthusiastic community.
