Don't take risk before it gets more complicated take the server offline as preliminary precaution. Its very likely there is a backdoor. SSH would be the most obvious way, so check access logs for anything that looks strange.

The overall security around kodi is questionable...agreed with ScutMonkey the main question is of stability and OS. Unfortunately XBMC is evolving with content not with code :/

Firewalld & Iptables are applications which are used to filter the incoming and the outgoing packets where as iptables are the front end where you are creating the rules

I am using VMware on windows 10 also used VM Fusion with a Windows 7 virtual machine for app testing in Windows.
