Since the VLC program starts and appears to be capable of playing audio through your system, maybe one of the various Effects settings got changed. Check the Tools --> Effects and Filters GUI and make sure no odd effects are enabled.

Same issue here last week, after the 7.6(1810) update. In my case I needed to add ...,vers=3.0 to get the CIFS shares to mount reliably.
