Re: xinetd not using ~user/.my.cnf
Figured it out. In addition to user = nagios, in CentOS 5 you must also add env = HOME=/home/nagios
# default: off # description: NRPE (Nagios Remote Plugin Executor) service nrpe { flags = REUSE type = UNLISTED port = <removed> socket_type = st...

xinetd not using ~user/.my.cnf
I'm running NRPE (Nagios remote plugin execution) as an xinetd service. The service is configured to use the user 'nagios' and I've configured ~nagios/.my.cnf with the mysql password. The .my.cnf file is automatically used when logged in locally but does not work through xinetd. The error is: [font=...

Re: sendmail or postfix with gmail (google apps) smarthost relay
yyagol, I just tried your link and I'm getting stuck in the certificate section. I'm glad you offered your suggestion but it does not "work like a charm". It seems to have been written for a different distro so it needs some tweaking for CentOS. Hopefully I can figure this thing out and post a bette...

sendmail or postfix with gmail (google apps) smarthost relay
Has anyone succeeded in configuring CentOS 5 with gmail or google apps smtp as a smarthost relay? I've tried to follow the guides on many sites including this one specifically for CentOS but could never get it to work. http://www.karma.net/html/files/57f5a9689d6b66cdb7811b2ec7e7ae3e-43.php If you've...

Re: centos 5.2 I want my own server, but How can I do it?
Welcome to Linux Dakasadaka. The first thing I'd tell you is to read up on Linux and run the server internally on your LAN before opening any ports from the Internet. Once you open ports you are inviting the world to connect to your server and if it's not secure that can be very bad. I...

Re: New Web Server
Another option might be to switch from mod_php to fast cgi. mod_php runs php in the httpd process which runs as apache:apache. This can be a problem for shared servers as you've noticed. As a cgi, httpd spawns a separate PHP process which can be run as the user, not apache. Some argue that there is ...

Re: Upgrade PHP to 5.2.6, how?
Jasonlitka's repo seems to be up to date and it also includes xcache which was a significant improvement on my box. Doesn't look like EPEL has xcache.

Issue when connecting cable modem directly to server
How powerful is the server? Try vmstat or top while running the speed test.

How to get a super stripped down install?
When I first started doing minimal installs I'd uncheck everything except "base" thinking that base was required but later found that base can be unchecked and it makes the install much smaller. As for light powerful firewalls, my favorites are M0n0wall and [ur...
