Although it would involve a reboot, why don't you use systemctl to boot into multi-user.target, which doesn't run x-windows
(if I understand what you want to do correctly). That way you don't have to remove anything.

Re: Weird display issues after fresh install of Centos?!
BS"D I recently had that sort of display issue when installing a Ryzen based machine with an Nvidia graphics card. However, I have installed so many machines recently that I can't quite remember what I did to overcome it. If you can login remotely, then install the graphics driver that way; I...

I have installed Centos7.4 on my Threadripper box (also 1950x) and then updated the Kernel to 4.14 from elrepo. Seems stable running a lot of Gromacs tests, with all cores and both GPU's (Geforce 1080's).
Motherboard is an Asus Prime X399-A.

It seems your yum update managed to update the kernel. If so, you need to recompile your Nvidia driver against the new kernel (use the .run file to uninstall, then re-install).

BS"D If you are already trying to start again, you should be aware that in the initial installation menu, where you see text, go down to "Troubleshooting", and there, choose the basic graphic mode installation option (sorry, don't have it in front of me now, so I don't remember exactly how they phra...

BS"D Along the lines of what Mike said, if you are using the propriety Nvidia driver, you need to go into non-graphic mode systemctl set-default multi-user.target reboot and then recompile your nvidia driver for the new kernel Then go back to graphical mode. systemctl set-default graphical.target re...

Re: after recent update, black screen-- i am a newbie
BS"D If you are using the propriety Nvidia driver, then you need recompile the driver for the new kernel. One way to do this is if you can connect to the PC from the outside (ssh), reboot to non-graphical mode by systemctl set-default multi-user.target reboot Then use the .run file from Nvidia to un...

Actually, I have found that installing using the basic graphics driver option (under "Troubleshooting" in the initial install screen ) avoids the whole nouveau issue, and then allows one to install the Nvidia driver without problems.

Sorry to ask a stupid question, but did you set the target back to "graphical"?
systemctl set-default graphical.target

I have found that disks taken from a former RAID configuration will be ignored by the installer in Centos 7 until the RAID configuration information is erased.
So you may need to connect these drives on a functioning machine and reformat them with whatever facility is available.
