Future CentOS 8 et AMD

Post by Adrien.D » 2019/07/08 08:40:18

Hello,

I have a PC, with 16GB of RAM, AMD Ryzen™ 5 2600X https://www.amd.com/fr/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-5-2600x + and graphicc Radeon™ RX 560 https://www.amd.com/fr/products/graphics/radeon-rx-560

When I start CentOS7 in a Virtual Machine, i have a warning about AMD processor.
I tested RHEL 8 and same message :

Is the future CentOS 8 had this problem ?

What about theses specifications ?

On the AMD website, for CPU :
*Systèmes d'exploitation compatibles
Windows 10 - Édition 64 bits
RHEL x86 64-Bit
And for GPU :
Système d'exploitation pris en charge
Windows 10 - Édition 64 bits
Windows 7 - 32-Bit Edition
Windows 7 - 64-Bit Edition
Ubuntu x86 64-Bit
Linux x86_64
Thanks !

Since CentOS 8 will be a direct rebuild of RHEL8, if it does it on RHEL8 then it will do it on CentOS 8 too.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Okay, thanks for your quick answer.

It' very curious that recent CPU not supported correctly.
Because RHEL is professional hardware oriented and not used a lot on personal computers ?

Hello,

in this page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryzen#Linux
is write:
The full performance of Ryzen processors is available with Linux kernel version 4.10 or newer
The kernel of RHEL 8.0 is 4.18.xx
I have a PC with Ryzen 1700 and a NVIDIA 1060 , but the Nouveau driver blocking at booting the PC.
I install RHEL 8.0 beta in basic graphics mode and after i have disabled Nouveau and installed the Nvidia drivers.
Now at the moment RHEL 8 work wery well

RHEL 7 may be able to run a Zen+ chip (which is what you have) but specific kernel support was never officially backported and tested. This is likely due to the fact that there never was an EPYC variant of Zen+, only the original Zen series had a lineup. Zen 2 support may be backported, despite RHEL 7 no longer being in full support mode. Similar things happened with RHEL 6 so customers could keep running the platform (Intel architectures were added well past full support mode).

I install RHEL 8.0 beta
You should not be running the pre-release beta anymore. Consider upgrading to 8.0 GA or using the 8.1 beta released last week. This is assuming you’re still using the beta, which won’t be receiving any updates or security fixes ever.
