Path to upgrade to version 7?

Post by hismaimai9999 » 2018/11/09 06:15:26

I haven't been following in a while, but last I checked about 6 months ago there seemed to be no path from 6.7 to 7.0. Something about the tool breaking the install.

Can anyone elaborate? Is there now a path to upgrade 6.7 to 7.x ?

That situation is unchanged. However, you're encouraged to upgrade to 6.10 to get a few years' worth of security & other updates.

To the best of my knowledge, no-one is even looking at the tool so the situation is unlikely to change. There have been several calls on the mailing lists etc for volunteers to look at it and work out what's wrong. Several people have said that they would look over the years and then were never heard of ever again.

I wouldn't wait for it to be fixed if I were you.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

I can't believe RedHat doesn't provide an upgrade option. We can do this with Debian-flavored distributions.

Red Hat does provide a tool. CentOS, however, does not as there is nobody to put in the work to create a working version.

The thing is, that tool is most probably equally broken on RHEL.

No, the tool works for RHEL though it only works for the most generic install types. The modifications to the original packages to cater for CentOS were extensive and too much work so the person who did that doesn't want to do it again.
