[UNRESOLVED] - Radeon HD 7450

Post by warron.french » 2015/04/03 14:31:27

Can anyone please help with suggesting a valid driver set for the following (results from an lspci | grep -i vga):

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Caicos PRO [Radeon HD 7450]

I am using this video card in several workstations running CentOS-6.6 64-bit, and have not been able to find a suitable driver source for this device.

I found these links, and they were not very helpful:

viewtopic.php?t=22451

Can anyone tell me please, if they know for sure if I can trust these drivers:

Here is an update,

I went to this website: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/d ... 4%E2%80%8B and downloaded the driver for RHEL6 x86_64.

I used the following command on my workstation:

yum install fglrx64_p_i_c-14.501.1003-1.x86_64.RHEL6_64a.rpm

As it was completing the installation (supposedly with success), I saw the following on the screen:
Unable to send message to PackageKit.

So, I went looking for the new software in the Centos "taskbar" both before and after a system reboot by doing the following, using the mouse clicking on System > Preferences and I attempted to use:
  1. 1. AMD Catalyst Control Center
  • 2. AMD Catalyst Control Center (Administrative)
and the response on the screen was the following:

"Initialization error"
There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux editon.
It could be caused by the following.

No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning properly.
Please install the AMD driver appropriate for your AMD hardware, or configure using aticonfig.

To be honest, I thought that is what I was doing.

Please help, as I am implementing new drivers to overcome the issue of the GUI banner being too big at the GDM Banner screen when user's initially log in. The Login: and Password: fields are not visible during login.
Thanks,
War

ELRepo is preferred
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

TrevorH any suggestion on how to determine the appropriate RPM for my system? I am isolated from the internet with these workstations.

Is there an appropriate approach to determine which RPM I actually need instead of Seek and Destroy?

I am entirely at a loss. :?

I downloaded the following from http://lists.elrepo.org/pipermail/elrep ... 02535.html

fglrx-x11-drv-32bit-14.12-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm
fglrx-x11-drv-devel-14.12-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm
fglrx-x11-drv-14.12-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm
kmod-fglrx-14.12-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm

I performed: yum install (all of the files listed above at one time) and let CentOS determine dependency-order; but the system complained again with:
"Unable to send message to PackageKit"

So, I rebooted my machine anyway, and the system continued to reboot until I interrupted it the 4th time. Frustrating.

I noticed the Display application in System > Preferences offered 1920x1200 so I really don't even understand why the banner does not fit into the GDM Window that shows the Security Banner - properly. It's baffling.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?
Thanks,
War

This issue was never solved. In fact, it appears that AMD Video Cards are not well supported by CentOS/AMD video drivers at all.

This problem arose for another coworker on another AMD video card; also for CentOS-6.x.
