Last time I had a similar problem when I bought printer. I chose Brother printer. Brother has a linux driver for most of models, and works without problem.

Not a combined unit, but the following may be of interest:

I use a Brother HL-4340DL (mono, double sided, USB) at work and it has proved to be reliable for several years with CentOS 6. On Saturday I bought a Samsung M2026W (mono, single sided, USB or (not and) WiFi) for home. Once you get the hang of things it is easier to install it under CentOS 7 then under Windows 7 or 8. One nice touch; it has a web interface so that you can control and view supplies without the need to run a Windows front end. I bought a Cannon Lide scanner a few months back. Nice doorstop, shame that Cannon don't want our business though.

Check the price of toner for both and how many pages. HP inkjets are notorious for having short toner life and making their money back with toner pricing, especially on inkjets.

Another option is the Samsung C460w or similar, MFC laser color. Samsung offers Linux drivers, but you don't even need them. Get the ppd put it where you want to put your ppd, add a line to xsane.d's xerox printer line tcp <ip_address> and everything works. (If you do go with the Samsung I'll give more detail, but for now, I'll just say it's quite easy, and, unlike some others, also works with FreeBSD and OpenBSD's versions of saned. In addition, there are some replacement generic toner kits that got what seem to be legitimate good reviews on Amazon.

HP is buying (or has bought?) Samsung's printer division. That might be why I keep seeing them on sale right now, usually for less than $300. I got mine for $215 plus $40 shipping.

Heh you wrote LASERjet and I saw JET. However, even their toners are going to be more expensive than Brother or a generic. Still, they're very good at working with Linux, especially with hplip.

In general I agree with you. I have a number of HP printers at home and work.

Where you might find a problem is that a very new model of printer might need a newer version of hplip than is provided as a CentOS rpm. You may have to build from source.
