does centos 6 natively support wireless driver for netgear wn111 v2?

Post by tex73 » 2011/07/16 13:40:55

Hi !
i only have a wireless internet connection. some months agos i installed the previous version of this Os (centos 5.5) on my computer, but i discovered that it didn't support my wireless usb adapter(netgear wn111 v2) with fedora 14 and 15 that probleme was solved but for me , fedora is just for testing linux; that is why i went back to windows. now before installing centos 6, i would like to like to know if my wireless adapter will work.
thanks for your reponse.

Hi tex73,

I cannot tell you off hand if CentOS 6 will recognize your wireless NIC. But I CAN tell you of a little experiment which should give you a good indication without actually installing CentOS 6 or whacking your current OS.

Burn the CentOS image of your choice to a DVD. Note that the 32 bit image is a little too big to fit on a DVD+. It has been stated that it will fit on a DVD-. I burned it to a dual layer DVD and that works fine. Here is the test process:

0 - If your PC has a built in wired NIC you will need to disable it in BIOS. If you need help doing that please post back. Or post back and I will explain Plan B which is a little more involved.
1 - Boot your PC from the DVD prepared above.
2 - Step through the first few screens of the installation process. It will ask you your preferred language, keyboard and if you are using Basic storage or something else.
3 - The next screen will ask you to "Please name this computer..."
4 - Look at the button on this screen labeled "Configure Networking" If the button is enabled, your network card is probably recognized. If the button is grayed out your network card was not recognized by the Anaconda installer. That does not mean that it will not work. It just means MORE WORK to get it to work.
5 - Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot the machine and abort the install. Pop the DVD out and boot to your normal OS.

You are safe in doing this provided you do not go beyond the "Please name this computer..." screen. I have done it MANY times over the past few days.

Please post your results and I will see if I can think of some next steps.

Ken

CentOS will only follow what comes down from TUV. If it is not in the upcoming 6.1 then perhaps some 3rd party such as ELRepo may be able to help.
