[RESOLVED] ATI Radeon video driver issue

Post by taylorkh » 2011/07/21 17:57:22

Starting with a fresh install of CentOS 6 - 64 bit with all current updates I decided to try and install the ATI driver so I could configure my dual monitors. I downloaded the appropriate driver ati-driver-installer-11-6-x86.x86_64.run from the vendor's web site. I ran the run file (as root) and the thing seemed to install OK. I rebooted to get a clean start of things. When I invoked the ATI Catalyst gui and selected "Display Options" I received a message
You currently have only one desktop enabled. Configuring more than one desktop in Display Manager will allow you to configure Xinerama
So I closed the ATI app and ran System; Preferences; Monitors. The box [X] Clone Display (or something like that) is checked. I uncheck it and receive a bubble message
The selected configuration for displays could not be applied. requested position/size for CRTC72
is outside the allowed limit: position=(1280,0) size(1280,1024). maximum=(1680,1680)
The monitors connected are:

Samsung SyncMaster 932B which normally runs 1280x1024
Acer x223w which normally runs 1680 x 1050

By normally I mean with the PC running Ubuntu 10.04 with the ATI driver (or the PC running Ubuntu 10.04 with an nVidia card and nVidia drivers before I changed it out for the ATI card). The ATI card is an MSI %5450 with HD5450 chip set.

So I restored the machine to pre-ATI state from a g4l snapshot. I can uncheck the [ ] Clone Displays setting in the Monitor Preferences. When I reboot I find that the panels are gone from one monitor so I guess they are no longer "cloned".

CentOS 5.6 worked with the nVidia card. However, Ubuntu was unstable with that card during suspend/resume and after a year and a half I replaced it with an ATI. Putting the nVidia card back in to try CentOS 6 is probably not something I am willing to do at this point. My searches on RHEL 6 and ATI drivers do not seem to bode well. So I guess the question is... Is anyone running CentOS 6 with an ATI video card and dual monitors?

The results of the getinfo script are attached (I hope).

TIA,

Ken

It did not, has not, and will not, until we get Website Ver2 Real-soon-now [TM - Jerry Pournelle in Byte]. :-)

Why not try the kmod-fglrx kABI-tracking driver from ELRepo? Don't know about dual-monitors, but at least someone else keeps up with releases for you, and you don't have to rebuild every time a new kernel comes down the pike.

Things are moving (forward I hope). I restored the OS image from before my prior attempt. I then installed the driver from ELRepo. I was sort of back where I was yesterday. The message
You currently have only one desktop enabled. Configuring more than one desktop in Display Manager will allow you to configure Xinerama
finally sunk into my thick skull. Display Manager was not the Display tool in Gnome. Rather it referred to the Display Manager element in the ATI menu tree. So after screwing with that and a few reboots I recalled that if I wanted more than one desktop I had to choose Single display desktop (multiple displays) in the ATI tool. At least that worked in Ubuntu and it worked here as well. I now have my two "desktops" with separate panels on each. However, if I plunk down something on my "Desktop" it shows on the right monitor when I want it on the left. I had to edit xorg.conf in Ubuntu to convince ATI that Display 1 was really Display 0 and that Display 2 was really Display 1. I will compare my CentOS and Ubuntu xorg.conf files and see if I can get that sorted.

Stick a fork in this one and call it RESOLVED. I have no idea exactly how I did it other than to take my latest Ubuntu nVidia xorg.conf file (after I had replaced the nVidia card with an ATI card, uninstalled the nVidia drivers, installed the ATI drivers, kicked the PC across the room and rebooted it 4 1/2 times) and used that file to replace the one I have been trying to build on CentOS with the ATI Catalyst tool. Anyhow the two monitors are functioning as desired, I have saved the xorg.conf file in 37 separate places and I am preparing to print it on acid free paper and store it in my safety deposit box at the bank - just in case :-D

I got real close with the ATI tool. However, the left monitor at 1280 x 1024 had a nice font on the panel, in a terminal etc. The right monitor at 1680 x 1050 had a sort of bold font which looked like crap. I saved the xorg.conf and copied over the one I am using on Ubuntu, rebooted and behold everything looks like it should.

I may try comparing and tweaking the CentOS/ATI vs. Ubuntu xorg.conf files line by line to figure out what caused the font issue... but probably not any time soon.

Thanks again Phil for the tip on ELRepo.

You are welcome, but thanks should go to the hard-working and knowledgeable ELRepo crew. :-)
