CentOS 6 on Geode LX800 (or any other i586 CPU)

Some of you might remember that CentOS 5 failed to installed on an AMD Geode LX800 CPU. The problem was that due to a bug that only seemed to affect CentOS but was fixed at some point in RHEL, it didn't recognize the Geode as i686 CPU but i586 instead, and subsequently claimed it couldn't provide a proper kernel. More on this can be found here, discussed and analyzed in detail: https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?viewmode=flat&topic_id=29278&forum=37

Anyhow, does anyone know whether or not CentOS 6 suffers from the same bug? I'm currently running CentOS 4.8 on my Geode LX800 based homeserver and would like to have something more recent. And in a closely related matter: is it possible to go straight from 4.8 to 6.0?

CentOS 6 is even more restrictive. It requires a processor with PAE support.

Short answer - it is not recommended nor supported. A longer answer may be found here. Although it does not specifically address 4.x the approach and concerns are similar, but probably worse for 4. Probably all a moot point if the system you want to migrate from is not PAE-capable; however, see ELRepo RFE ID#153. Even with a kernel, if that should come along, there's still the little matter of an installer.

Shoot... I guess that settles it:

Thanks guys, I guess I'm stuck with CentOS 4 for now (which is not necessarily a bad thing, after all it works great and given that I'm behind a firewall I can easily survive way past its eol without any serious danger).
