ATI Radeon HD 6470M driver for Sony Vaio VPCSB11FX

Post by aquaman » 2011/07/25 04:10:13

Installed CentOS 6 on a new Sony Vaio laptop model #VPCSB11FX. This laptop has two GPU's. One on the sandy bridge CPU used in power saving mode and a Radeon HD 6470M. You can see them listed below in the lspci section. Under Fedora 15 I had no problems using my laptop with an attached monitor. After switching to CentOS 6 the display preferences no longer recognizes any monitor. It simply says "unkown" and does not allow me to change any settings related to my monitors.

After reading several forums I have tried installing kmod-fglrx. The install was successful. Still my monitor shows up as unknown in the display preferences. When I try to run aticonfig I get the following error "aticonfig: No supported adapters detected"

I am at a loss as to what to try next. My goal is to be able to manage my monitors and use an attached monitor. Any ideas would be appreciated.

The relavent information from getInfo.sh script follows:

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Congratulations on being one of the select few to have done the recommended reading before posting.

All I can suggest is that CentOS 6.1 should include better support for Sandy Bridge. I have no idea if that will help with these dual-graphics systems. See also this upstream bug report.

Interestingly the latest ATI graphics drivers (v11.7) now supports switching between dual chipsets where both are ATI chipsets, i.e, where there is a low powered onboard ATI chipset and a discrete ATI chipset too (a solution found in some laptops apparently). Anyway, ELRepo has these latest drivers (kmod-fglrx, version 11.7).

I have no idea for mixed Intel/ATI systems, but I know switching isn't currently supported by the proprietary drivers (likewise for mixed Intel/nVidia systems).
