Reinstall CentOS
I dual booted CentOS 5.9 Many years ago with MS 98 SE. So many years ago that I forgot that CentOS was on that box. Don't remember the Root password. The situation is that I boot 98SE to run AutoCAD 14 for 2D work. Both my 98SE and AutoCAD disks are wonky, so can not reinstall them. I can run 98SE and AutoCAD after booting from GRUB, and I can boot to CentOS 5.9, but can not run as root. Can I reinstall 5.9 w/o disturbing windows? How? Do I need to reinstall a newer CentOS version for security? I run LinuxMint on my usual computer, but am considering using CentOS on the old box for added security for financial dealings.

Try the wiki link to reset the root password https://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/ResetRootPassword
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
