Thanks JH for the yum groupinstall tip...

I just expected YUM Groupinstall to work the same way as version 4.x of CentOS in which I did yum groupinstall gnome desktop - and it did X and Gnome all. I thought that is how YUM worked anyhow. YUM knows you asked for Gnome therefore picked X Window System also since it is a dependency...right? Like I said, it worked in version 4.x

Anyhow, what is the command to search for Groupinstall options? Like yum search app - but for groupinstall apps?

Thanks again and initial thought after correction - NICE! Very nice!

The groupinstall feature works for KDE but doesn't this seem awkward? During the graphical install what's the point of having a user select a desktop if the installer doesn't install it?

Is this the way the upstream distro works for graphical installs?

After first using the "yum groupinstall" "X Window Environment" "KDE" on a straight CENTOS 5 build ( no Xen ) to deliver a desktop I then did a fresh install from the DVD to bare metal with Xen . Just like the straight CentOS Xen came up with no desktop but the same yum groupinstall command would not create the desktop.

I don't have RHEL so I can't say if this is how RHEL is supposed to behave but I can say that the CentOS 4.95 Beta built Xen with the chosen desktop right from the graphical installer with no effort.

sorry aarfab, should of saw your link first. But you know, what really perplexes me is why yum groupinstall gnome desktop worked fine in CentOS 4.x versions and not in 5.

merlot - make sure if you did run the yum groupinstall "X windows Environment" "KDE" to reboot. After reboot, log in, and run STARTX command

After booting into the Xen kernel and logging into root doing a"

yum groupinstall "X Windows Environment" "KDE" produces

Warning: Group X Windows Environment does not exist.
Warning: Group KDE does not exist

This is perplexing.
