C5 will not install on MSI KT3 Ultra

Post by nmad » 2007/04/27 05:17:56

Here is the result of lspci for this PC with a MSI KT3 Ultra MB with 1GB RAM, currently running C4.4 on a 160gb hd on the IDE controller (not on the Promise controller):

00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8366/A/7 [Apollo KT266/A/333]
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8366/A/7 [Apollo KT266/A/333 AGP]
00:07.0 Ethernet controller: D-Link System Inc DGE-530T Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (rev 11) (rev 11)
00:0b.0 USB Controller: NEC Corporation USB (rev 41)
00:0b.1 USB Controller: NEC Corporation USB (rev 41)
00:0b.2 USB Controller: NEC Corporation USB 2.0 (rev 02)
00:0c.0 RAID bus controller: Promise Technology, Inc. PDC20276 (MBFastTrak133 Lite) (rev 01)
00:11.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233A ISA Bridge
00:11.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586A/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT823x/A/C PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
00:11.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 23)
00:11.3 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 23)
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 40)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV36 [GeForce FX 5700LE] (rev a1)

C4.4 installed w/o problems on this PC; however, the C5.0 install freezes after selecting the keyboard.

Has anyone else had success with this MB or chip set?

I should add that (although C4.4 installs and runs on this PC without a hitch), FC6 would not install on it either.

Thanks for the suggestion. However, that does not make any difference; I have 1G ram, enough for a graphical installation.

I just tried disabling the on board promise raid controller, et voila, the installation goes past the last freezing point. I just wonder if I will have to enable/disable this controller in the bios each time I want to use the raid array in windowsxp. I am, of course, hoping that C5.x will bring me back to C4.4, where the raid controller is not an issue.

I am a somewhat reluctant to blow away my functioning C4.4 installation in exchange for reduced functionality.

SO you need driver for your controller supporting CentOS 5

Yes, I seems that the driver for the promise controller is not in the istallation disk kernel. I will have to compare the C4.4 and C5 kernels. I am not sure how to add the driver/module to the install, though.

I just checked the .config file for the latest C5 kernel. It indicates that the kernel is built with PDC202xx (the driver for the promise controller) set to "y". So, I can only guess that the driver is broken in C5, but not in C4.4

I note that there are a few related bug reports already submitted for C5 and FC6, which are "assigned". So, maybe I will wait for a fix and keep this C4.4 setup for a while longer.

Thanks for your msg, though.
