Re: usb ethernet driver/setup
For those persons interested and who are not subscribed to the ELRepo users' mailing list the relevant announcement is available to view in the mail archives.
Once it has been read, a loop back to post #2 of this thread will be appropriate. ;-)
As this is a CentOS forum, I'll just mention that the ELRepo project has its own mailing lists and bug tracker for the packages that it supplies to users of Enterprise Linux OS's, of which the CentOS Project is a subset.

Re: usb ethernet driver/setup
Driver works great! Shows up as eth2.
I hope to see this driver in future CentOS release. Thanks again for your help.

Excellent. To read those three words makes the time spent on creating the revised package worthwhile. :-D

It will only appear in a later point release of CentOS 5 if TUV include it in their product, RHEL 5.
AFAIR, it should be included in RHEL 6. So it should be found in CentOS 6. ;-)

Re: usb ethernet driver/setup
I am running into the same issue here:
2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 i686 i386 -- CentOS release 5.4 (Final)
running on a mac mini, using the Apple USB Ethernet adapter to setup an eth1 connection because I'm using this system to run nTop. Did this originally in FC12 with no problems.
I did find the deviceID and fingerprint: Bus 001 Device 007: ID 05ac:1402 Apple, Inc.
even found the RPM off ElRepo that looks like is what I need: http://elrepo.org/linux/elrepo/el5/i386/RPMS/kmod-asix-2.6.20-3.el5.elrepo.i686.rpm
ran rpm -iVH
rpm -ivh kmod-asix-2.6.20-3.el5.elrepo.i686.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:kmod-asix ########################################### [100%]
Creating the symbolic links. This may take some time ... Done.
Running /sbin/ifconfig still doesnt show the device. when I did the FC12 install, I remember that eth1 doesn't get an IP address when set in promiscuous mode and is connected to a switch port doing port mirroring, so I didnt assign any IP address or GW, subnet mask, etc in the system-config-network utility.
I know its something simple, but I'm still learning.. any thoughts?

1. Do the required reading and don't hijack threads for a similar issue.
2. If you have a working network connection on another interface update to the current/supported version - CentOS 5.5 with kernel-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5
3. If still having problems show the results of getinfo.sh driver in a fresh thread, with a link back to this one for context.

No. You have installed the wrong version (2.6.20-3). Please look at the links in post #10 to this thread.
[ajb@stxsl ~]$ yum --enablerepo elrepo-testing list available kmod-asix
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, priorities
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
<snip>
Available Packages
kmod-asix.i686 2.6.20-4.el5.elrepo elrepo-testing
This is an ELRepo query that would have best been asked on the ELRepo users' mailing list.

Re: usb ethernet driver/setup
Sorry Guys
Sorry about hijacking. Apologies for not doing enough reading, etc..
Am still having problems and will just move this over to a new thread and/or the ElRepo mailing list.

Re: usb ethernet driver/setup
In case this is still a relevant topic (7 years later), I came across it after purchasing this model USB 3.0 - gigabit interface devices, and attempted to install it.
I'm using CentOS 6.9 (updated) and was able to activate and configure the device in about 10 minutes time...
At a 'high level', this is what I did:
Download latest (2 year old) driver 'source':
http://www.asix.com.tw/FrootAttach/driv ... CE.tar.bz2
# on the build system
tar xf AX88179_178A_LINUX_DRIVER_v1.18.0_SOURCE.tar
cd AX88179_178A_LINUX_DRIVER_v1.18.0_SOURCE
make
scp -p ax88179_178a.ko <target server>:/var/tmp
# on the target system
cd /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net/usb
sudo cp -p /var/tmp/ax88179_178a.ko .
sudo chown root:root ax88179_178a.ko
sudo chmod 0744 ax88179_178a.ko
sudo depmod -a
lsmod | grep usbnet
sudo insmod ax88179_178a.ko
lsmod | grep usbnet
lsmod | grep ax
sudo tail -25 /var/log/messages
cd /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
sudo cp -p ifcfg-eth0 ifcfg-eth1
sudo vi ifcfg-eth1
netstat -nr
sudo ifdown eth0
sudo ifup eth1
sudo tail -f /var/log/messages
netstat -nr
ifconfig
# Test results
This was done on an older PC (Compaq DX5150) having 1 'onboard' gigabit interface.
An SCP of an ISO image over my gigabit LAN, resulted in 340mbit/sec on the 'onboard' interface, and 140mbit/sec using the USB 3.0 device.
(I'll be re-testing using newer PC models, as well as those with full USB 3.0 interfaces, to see what it's full potential is).

Re: usb ethernet driver/setup
a) don't hijack ancient threads for ancient unsupported versions of CentOS or post the wrong forum section
b) yum install elrepo-release && yum install kmod-ax88179_178a
b) yum install elrepo-release && yum install kmod-ax88179_178a
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
