I'll try that. Just to be sure, is there any chance that the -del will delete items from the SOURCE volume?

Read the man page.
Do the --delete only after running in test mode if you are worried.

SOLVED -

The problem I was having was indeed due to the use of the -z compression flag. Removing it sped it up tremendously and I feel it will allow me to make the move quite easily. Thanks to all for the help and suggestions.
