Install of 5.9 on IBM xSeries 306 completes but fails to boot

Post by AscendAdmin » 2013/04/18 19:32:03

I am trying to install CentOS 5.9 on an IBM xSeries 306 8836-4SU, with the onboard Adaptec HostRaid controller with 2 (hardware) mirrored drives.

The install CD boots, finds everything, partitions and installs OK. But when it reboots it just comes up to a blank black screen with a blinking underscore cursor in the top left corner. It accepts no input and can only reboot it. The drive light never blinks that I can see once it passes the CD and diskette detection process. I have tried F12 to boot directly from disk but get the same result.

If I start the install over again it sees the existing install and has an option to upgrade it. If I select that it says one or more volumes in the group /dev cannot be mounted, fix the problem before continuing.

I upgraded the BIOS to the latest version and tried again, no luck. The IBM is at V1.43a firmware and the Adapted is V2.2. 2G of memory and 3.2GHz CPU.

Any Ideas?

Thank you in advance...

An Adaptec HostRAID controller is not a hardware RAID controller. You need to go into its BIOS and turn off the HostRAID stuff and use the disks as two separate physical disks.
