Not having a [i]CentOS 5[/i] system available with which to check, I will suggest that you have a look at the contents of your [b]/etc/sysconfig/authconfig[/b] file and the manual page for authconfig ([b]man authconfig[/b]).

authconfig does not run unless you run it...so you're pretty safe if you remember to change the stuff back if you need to run authconfig someday...

Sounds great, my questions are:

1)Am I compromising something by making changes to system-auth?
2)Should it be password requisite OR password required?
