Is it possible to keep a 10g Oracle install when upgrading to CentOS 5?

Post by avoncampe » 2008/05/02 18:55:58

I am currently running an Oracle 10g instance on my CentOS 4.6 desktop system. I plan to upgrade my desktop to CentOS 5.1 in the near future. What (if anything) do I need to do to keep Oracle running after I upgrade the OS? Or if this is not possible, what is the best migration path for my database while upgrading the OS?

All of the Oracle installation is on a separate disk, so the Oracle installation will not be touched by the upgrade at all. In case it matters, here is my exact Oracle version number as reported by sqlplus:

Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production

Thanks,
Alfred

Hi

I haven't done the upgrade your specifically asking about, but it should be okay.

You may need to relink the Oracle binaries using the relink command.

Worst case scenario is you simply install a fresh Oracle software installation and change the configurations to use that.

None of your data should be impacted etc etc.

Nick.

I finally bit the bullet and upgraded my system to CentOS 5.1. The Oracle 10g instance did not have any problems at all when I brought it up after relinking. It was much easier than I thought.

Well, you should have taken a full back up of your datafiles (including tablespaces, redo logs, indexes etc) before upgrading to the new OS in order to verify your data integrity.... If something would go wrong then you could make a fresh install of the 10g and apply your previous backup... ;-)
