You asked for it -- you've got it.

It might be more appropriate for you to try --
yum reinstall "X Window System"
xserver wont start following rpm updates

Post by pschaff » 2010/03/04 00:26:28

After gazing long and hard into my crystal ball I divine that Alan meant
yum reinstall @x-window-system
I also see that you meant to post in the "CentOS 5 - Oracle Installation and Support" forum and not "CentOS 5 - X86_64, s390(x) and PowerPC Support" so will move you there; and one more thing is becoming clear in the mists... Yes - "If you break it you get to keep all the pieces!" :-)

I was hoping by moving to the Oracle forum that someone knowledgeable might comment on the above. Are those really necessary for Oracle? xorg was forked from XFree86. I strongly suspect you do not want XFree86.

At this point I'd try the following from a root login on a text-mode console in runlevel 3 (which is presumably the only option at this point).
yum remove XFree86-libs XFree86-libs-data openmotif
yum groupremove "X Window System"
yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"

Optional:
yum groupinstall "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
- plus anything else important removed above -

If and only if required for Oracle:
yum install @x-window-system openmotif
Thankyou for the advice I have installed the packages as below.

yum remove XFree86-libs XFree86-libs-data openmotif
yum groupremove "X Window System"
yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"

The server on reboot now reports an issue "INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled fro 5 minutes"

This caption repeates every 5 min X is still not available

Best Regards, Dave

Boot to runlevel 3 and run system-config-display as described in this post.
