[SOLVED] Can we install Oracle 11gR2 on Centos 5.4

Post by harvarinder » 2010/05/21 23:35:10

Hi,

I am trying to install Oracle 11gR2 on Centos 5.4 but it is not installing.

By looking at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e10840/pre_install.htm#CIHFICFD I can see that centos5.4 is not the supported version of operating system for Oracle11gR2.

Is this true that we can not install Oracle 11gR2 on Centos5.4 ??

Thank you.
Harvey.

For CentOS 5.4 you should look for a reference to RHEL 5.4.

I have looked at the link you have provided and find that Oracle only refers to RHEL 5.2 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Update 2).

So the answer to your question appears to be yes, it cannot be installed on CentOS 5.4.

Hi AlanBartlett,

Thank you for the information.

Can we install any version of Oracle on CentOS 5.4?

If no then I will be using the old un supported version 5.2 and then install Oracle 11gR2 on it. I hope I can install Oracle 11gR2 on CentOS 5.2

Any suggestions?

Sorry Harvey, I'm not an Oracle user. Hence I cannot help you with regards to which version to install on the current version of CentOS (which, as of the date of this post, is 5.5).

Yes, having checked the link you previously provided, I see that Oracle 11gR2 will install using RHEL 5.2. As the aim of the CentOS Project is to be 100% binary compatible with the upstream product, CentOS 5.2 may therefore be substituted for RHEL 5.2.

As you appreciate, usage of earlier version of the OS is not endorsed nor supported.

Perhaps others who do use Oracle may care to comment?

See this thread:

If you edit /etc/redhat-release to use the RHEL string, Oracle will install.

Hi Friends,

Thank you very much for your help.

I am able to install Oracle 11gR2 on CentOS 5.2 and 5.4 without any problems. I have followed the following steps to make it happen.

I think the issue was because of permissions.

chmod -R 777 linux_11gR2_database_1of2
chmod -R 777 linux_11gR2_database_2of2

then copy the content of Components folder from linux_11gR2_database_2of2 to the Components folder of linux_11gR2_database_1of2 (That is copying all the folders and file from Components to Components)

chmod -R 777 linux_11gR2_database_1of2

then ./runInstaller

and all worked very well.

Thank you.
