Centos 7 minimal install

Post by vulcancent » 2014/07/15 16:00:40

I believe that the minimal install that came out with Centos 6 was a brilliant accomplishment! So I was disappointed that Centos 7 does not have one too. I read that it was delayed because it was larger and did not fit on a CD. To me what is important is that the minimal install distribution exists, not that it fits on a CD. You can't even buy a CD device for a computer anymore that doesn't also read DVDs. I can't barely find blank CDs (to dup audio CDs) anymore, and when I do they are more expensive than blank DVDs. I don't understand the design decision that Centos 7 minimal install needs to fit on a CD (they are going the way of the floppy). If it does then just make it into two CDs like with a larger distribution.

Let me also add that I just went to my Centos CD and DVD masters which go back to Centos 4.3. The last time I even downloaded and burned a Centos distribution on CD was 5.6 on June 26, 2011. Since then I have only downloaded DVD images and never looked back. If a computer doesn't have a DVD I just use a portable USB DVD writer for the install.

It's more complex than just fitting it onto a CD. The goal is that it replicates whatever is installed on a machine by selecting the minimal install from the DVD. What that installs is a base set of packages, currently 297 of them on the machines and VMs that I've tested it on. But... the installer also looks at what hardware you have and pulls in automatic dependencies for packages required to support the hardware you have running. So it's not just a matter of "take this list of 297 packages and burn them to an iso image", it has to be tested on obscure hardware to make sure that the minimal install isn't going to detect something on the machine and attempt to install a package that isn't present.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
