How-to: CentOS 7 on Windows Subsystem Linux (WSL)

Post by devlocalca » 2019/06/28 06:04:46

On my Windows 10 Pro system, I would like to go to the Windows Store, choose : Centos 7 from the list, install and begin to use.

I can pick from a dozen Linux choices including:
  • SUSE Enterprise Linux 12
    Ubuntu 18.x
    Debian
    Kali Linux
    Alpine
    +others
How do we get CentOS up there front and present as a choice? The same question for RHEL 8, why is RedHat not a player there?

If it's not a choice in the Windows store, is there any other way to use CentOS under WSL.

I tried CentOS 7 under the latest version of Virtual Box, but it's badly broken, very problematic with the display, mouse capture, and many other problems.

You'll need to ask Redhat's lawyers.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

CentOS 7 works very well in VirtualBox as long as you install the Guest Additions in the VM and the Oracle VM Virtualbox Extension Pack in VirtualBox.

CentOS 7 works just fine under VirtualBox without the guest additions too.

Except for things like mouse use and display resizing, which it seems the OP is interested in. I agree it's fine for server configurations with no X.

Yes, but that behaviour is not "broken". It's just how it works. If you want seamless mouse and display resolution changes on the fly then you have to use the VBox guest additions. I run a GUI under vbox and it's fine if you like it with mouse capture and a reboot to change resolutions. VBox can do any resolution you want without the GA, as long as you add it to the VM settings.

It's not broken, but the behaviour is annoying to my users and I'm guessing the OP has the same issues.

I did indeed install Guest Additions, and it was not my experience that CentOS 7 works very well, or even well, or even half ass satisfactorily so, it was miserably unusable.

CentOS 7 does not work just fine, fine, or less than fine under VirtualBox, with or without guest additions, that was not my experience.

It just did not work to be barely usable.

Environment: Asus Threadripper motherbord, AMD Threadripper 1950X.

It went beyond annoying, it was not usable.

Environment: AMD Threadripper 1950X, ASUS TR4 motherboard. Windows 10 Pro (latest).
