PulseAudio sound quality issue

Post by kbr » 2019/08/31 12:31:21

I've set up OBS Studio (video/audio recording software) on CentOS 7, and was able to build it from source (as well as libspeexdsp-devel, which also needed to be built from source). I used this set of instructions: https://obsproject.com/wiki/install-ins ... directions

The video drivers work fine, however I noticed a very tinny sound on the built-in microphone that makes the resulting recordings very low quality. Has anyone had this issue with PulseAudio?

I understand that this is a software-specific issue, rather than a CentOS issue. However, this particular piece of software is the only thing I still use Windows for, and I would appreciate any tips and ideas folks might have. If I could get this to work, I could completely eliminate my need to work with Windows 10 (which is basically malware at this point, let's be real here).

Hello
I'm wondering if this is a codec issue.
what codec is being used to create the recording and what container ?
Also, have you mixed packages from rpmfusion and nux.
If it's aac the ffmpeg from nux uses libfdk-aac which I find gives excellent quality, the rpmfusion version may use the old libfaac codec which always sounded hideously tinny to me, if you just type ffmpeg in a terminal it will show the configured options, I use 2 versions of ffmpeg, the nux one and a static build from here https://johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/ I have never used OBS studio so don't know what options you can pass, can you change the encoder, frequency or bitrate ? or is it lossless.
If you play the recording from a terminal with mplayer or mpv it will show the codecs, bitrate and freq.

Hello
I just found OBS studio is available for flatpak here https://flathub.org/apps/details/com.obsproject.Studio
Might be worth a try and improve the sound quality.
Ok I've just watched a youtube video on how to improve audio on OBS https://youtube.com/watch?v=Sllv8qdv8ck there's definitely a whole load of options to improve your audio quality.
I have to say it does look like an impressive piece of software, might have to give it a whirl myself.
