Can't start graphical login (Radeon 7770)

Post by Jeff37 » 2014/08/05 15:36:08

Hello,

After a Gnome desktop installation, when I boot in text mode (runlevel 3) and then launch startx, everything's fine.
I got a normal display (even with my two monitors).

But graphical login (gdm?) hangs.
I'm getting a black or white background, the mouse cursor, and that's all.
When I plug my second monitor, I may have semi-random blue blocks.

Switching to a text console, then back to graphical seems to relaunch graphic initialization.
I cannot find anything special in Xorg's log file.

Thanks for help.

See if xorg-x11-glamor is installed and remove it if so.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I removed the package (and two other dependencies), but it didn't solve the problem.

Screen remains blacks, nothing happens...
...wait! After about a minute, I get a "Oh no! Something has gone wrong." graphical message.
Then, the login screen appears.

I log in, back to black screen and later "Oh no! Something has gone wrong." again.

Then nothing but darkness.

It may not be a problem with a video driver. Are there Gnome logs to look at?

Humm.. last time I tried, it worked, in a way.
After waiting a long time with a black screen, the desktop appeared.

/var/log/messages shows a problem with "gnome-settings-daemon.desktop".
It failed to register before timeout. Unrecoverable failure.

I tried other things, reinstalled with KDE, but I still can't solve the problem.

I successfully installed the latest ATI drivers for Redhat 7. But it didn't change anything.
