I installed the nvidia driver but it is not responding.

Post by Seokhyun Jeong » 2018/12/15 11:17:51

I use CentOS 7.6. I use a laptop. The model name is Gigabyte P34G v2. Use dual OS. (Windows 10 + CentOS 7) and also uses Secure Boot.
My laptop has the following specifications.

memory 15.4 GiB
processor Intel® Core™ i7-4710HQ CPU @ 2.50GHz × 8
graphics Intel® Haswell Mobile
gnome Version 3.28.2
OS type 64-bit

I got the status with nvidia-detect.

$ nvidia-detect -v
Probing for supported NVIDIA devices...
[10de:1392] NVIDIA Corporation GM107M [GeForce GTX 860M]
This device requires the current 410.78 NVIDIA driver kmod-nvidia
[8086:0416] Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller
An Intel display controller was also detected

And installed.

$ sudo yum install $(nvidia-detect)
An Intel display controller was also detected

The problem is that there is no "nvidia-settings" after installation. I have rebooted. There is no problem booting. However, there is still no "nvidia-settings". If I check it by rpm, "kmod-nvidia x86_64 3: 410.78-1.el7" is installed. Is this the correct installation of the nvidia driver?

[ Then I installed bumblebee and set it up.

LibraryPath=/usr/lib64/nvidia:/usr/lib64/vdpau:/usr/lib/nvidia:/usr/lib/vdpau

There is no /usr/lib64/nvidia directory. The nvidia driver does not seem to work on my laptop. ]

You have three repos enabled which all offer a (more or less different) packaged version of the nvidia driver: elrepo, rpmfusion, epel-multimedia. That's not going to work.

hi.

I use a laptop. My laptop has "NVIDIA Corporation GM107M [GeForce GTX 860M]". I installed the nvidia driver.

$ sudo yum install $(nvidia-detect)

From the answer, I found that this installation did not work. How do I install nvidia?

have a nice day!

Read the answer more carefully (i.e. think harder) and then draw your own conclusions.

Hint: first decide which of the three packaged versions of the nvidia driver you want.

Also you have a laptop with dual graphics cards and that almost always requires bumblebee or, perhaps more recently, something called nvidia prime.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

hi.

I chose elrepo and installed the nvidia driver. (epel-multimedia has no response.) I use a laptop. So be sure to install bumblebee. My laptop will not boot unless I install bumblebee.

But there was a problem. The application's window is all black. So I can not recognize the contents. Only the title bar showing the time is normal. I refer to the bumblebee page of elrepo.

I checked today and there was a primus. I have never installed primus. But the settings are the same for bumblebee and primus.

LibraryPath=/usr/lib64/nvidia:/usr/lib64/vdpau:/usr/lib/nvidia:/usr/lib/vdpau
XorgModulePath=/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia,/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers,/usr/lib64/xorg/modules

I do not have /usr/lib64/nvidia, /usr/lib/vdpau, and /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia directories.
I had three files that contained nvidia in a directory. I created an nvidia directory and copied three files. The vdpau directory was in /usr/lib64. I copied it and put it in /usr/lib.

However, the window of the application is black. Please help me. I do not know what to do anymore.

have a nice day!

PS: I found that nvidia prime is installed with driver downloaded from nvidia homepage. I do not know how to install nvidia prime separately. I am sorry that I do not know many things.

hi.

I installed nvidia again after reinstalling CentOS 7 several times. However, the screen of the application turns black. So for now I decided to stop installing the nvidia driver. Thank you for your reply.

have a nice day!

Just in case you decide to try again, the nvidia libraries were likely installed in /usr/lib64 and not in separate /usr/lib64/nvidia. Make the following change in /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf

LibraryPath=/usr/lib64:/usr/lib64/vdpau:/usr/lib:/usr/lib/nvidia:/usr/lib/vdpau

Hopefully, this will at least fix the black screen.
