Intel X5-8350, Sound & WiFi

Post by mhs73 » 2019/02/16 17:22:57

Hi,
I am using CentOS on Minix Neo Z83-4 since 7/2017, allthogh I know Cherry Trail is not the target platform for CentOS and Wifi & sound problems are often reported for Linux & SoC/Intel x5-83xx.
I got Wifi running with elrepo ml-kernel. Today I am using kernel 4.20.7-1. But the sound hardware is not detected by the elrepo kernel. The specific modules are not loaded, they are not even present in the elrepo kernel.
If I switch to kernel 3.10(.0-957.5.1), the specific modules for chtrt5645 are loaded. These are the same as with Ubuntu, where the sound card is running. But by aplay there is no sound device listed. Also the Wifi chip (Broadcom 4345) is not detected, brcmfmac not loaded, and no success with modprobe.
Dmesg reports, that my CPU is not supported. Is there any hope, that my problem can be fixed in the near future? - Or can anybody give me a hint what to do?
Best regards.

If the modules are present in the distro kernel and not in ELRepo's then I would suggest opening an RFE ticket on their bug tracker to request that they be enabled there too.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I made up a ticket on ElRepo for the sound issue.

Would you please take care about brcmfmac, too? If sound problems are fixed on CentOS distro one day (you need Linuxium's/Bossart's patch for /usr/share/alsa/ucm), I would prefer to use this instead of ElRepo. Then Wifi should work, too. But it does not.

ElRepo kernel detects brcm4345/6 only with (new) brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt in /lib/firmware/brcm, by loading module brcmfmac. But CentOS distro brcmfmac does not, even with new firmware.

Anyone that wants to follow the ELRepo ticket, it is https://elrepo.org/bugs/view.php?id=900 .

@mhs73,

CentOS is a rebuild of RHEL without modifications (except branding). Any bug fixes, feature requests must go through upstream (Red Hat). Once they are in the RHEL kernel, CentOS kernel will inherit them.

Does this mean I have to drop another ticket at Red Hat?

If you want something fixed in the RHEL kernel (the one that CentOS rebuilds and ships) then you need to report it on bugzilla.redhat.com. If/when they get around to fixing it then CentOS will inherit that fix.
