usb ports quit working

Post by hoodcanaljim » 2019/07/11 02:44:27

Hi
I have a Dell precision 390 with 7 usb ports running Centos 7 linux. I plugged in a old graphics tablet to see if it could work, it didn't. But after I unplugged it my keyboard/ mouse (wireless logitech w/usb dongle) quit working. It turns out that only one usb port in working the one at the rear next to the ethernet port.
I have pluged in my cell phone into all the ports but only the one at the rear shows the phone loading in the /var/log/messages file. The others seem to have power as the phone reacts to the connection and shows charging.
This appears in dmesg
dmesg | grep -i usb

Not sure if this means my motherboard is shot or if there is any way to recover from this?
Well after reading google searches and Centos forum post I realize I don't know anything about how the usb ports work.

Thanks
Jim

Did you reboot afterwards? If so and it didn't help then try power cycling the machine.

I've seen USB ports get put offline when an error occurs and nothing short of a total hardware reset (via poweroff) gets them back.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Trevor

I've rebooted and shutdown for 10 min. before restarting but nothings helped. I did see someone posted about power down, remove battery, hold down the power button until no lights remain on the motherboard. Is that what you mean?

Thanks
Jim

Just a power off ought to be enough. If they still don't work after that then I would expect a hardware problem. If the ports are directly attached to the motherboard then there's not much you can do but if they are off a cable attached to a pin-out on the board then you could try removing and replacing the cable (also it needs to be on the right way round but if it used to work and you didn't remove it/replace it already then it's probably already the right way round).

Trevor

Well I tried the power off / remove battery trick. And while it worked now I can't boot into Centos 7, I can boot into Debian from the same grub menu, but it "Entering emergency mode. Exit the shell to continue".
Looking at the google search for Dracut emergency scares me. Would someone be willing to lead me out of the woods and back to the light.
Oh the front usb slot worked in Debian, which it didn't before.

Thanks
Jim

Scroll back up the console messages using Shift-PgUp and find out what the error was. Perhaps you changed some BIOS option - like UEFI enable/disable?

Trevor

Long list of the same error
dracut-initqueue[375]: Warning: dracut-initqueue timeout - starting timeout scripts

Went through the Bios and didn't see a UEFI switch.

I am looking a the "https://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/CreateNewInitrd" for a fix. Is this the correct thing to do??

Thanks
Jim

The error would be further up than the dracut-initqueue errors. They are as a result of whatever the problem is. If you can't scroll back up that far then I'd recommend use of a video camera to capture the boot.

Trevor

kernal: {drm] Initialized nouveau....
kernal: random: fast init done
systemd[1]: Received SIGRTMIN+20 from PID 384 (plymouthd).
then many lines of dracut-initqueue.......

Thanks
Jim

Just noticed this message at the end of the journalctl

kernal: blk_update_request: I/O error: dev fd0: sector 0

line appears twice.

None of those are the problem.

Do you have rhgb quiet on your kernel command line? If so, remove them by editing it when you see the grub menu at boot time. Stupid "let's make things pretty" stuff obscures the actual errors you get...
