Packet Error on scp to VM Guest from external network

Post by bcbilly » 2014/08/22 01:50:46

I am experiencing a packet error during a scp copy (Error logs below). This problem seems to affect Centos 7, but not Centos 6.5.

When I try to copy large amounts of data to the VM guest from an external machine using scp, the transfer fails due to corrupt packet. If it were a hardware issue, the transfer would fail when I send a file to the Host server, but transfers to the host are successful.

I have tried a Ununtu 14.04LTS guest, and the Centos 7 guest (both 64bit). Both have had issues with packet errors during transmission.

However, a Centos 6.5 Guest in the same configuration does not have this problem. The transfer completes without issue

I can work around it by transferring the data to host, then using scp to the VM Guest.

I've used ethtool -t offline on the host and that passed.
The test on the VM Guest fails. I have tried nic types: virtio-net, MT Desktop, and MT Server
RDP Screen capture of the packet error
RDP Screen capture of the packet error

I'm not sure how to proceed to debug this further.

:) Thanks

Re: Packet Error on scp to VM Guest from external network

Correction... the VM that I doesn't experience the error is Centos 6.3.

The Network driver for both the VM that experiences the Packet Error and the Centos 6.3 server is
e1000: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - version 7.3.21-k8-NAPI
Same version on both

I was hoping it was a matter of a new driver, but I guess not.

I'm updating the Centos 6.3 to 6.5 to see if 6.5 works as expected.

I've narrowed down the issue to the difference between Centos 6.4 and 6.5.

This is the list of packages that where updated between those two versions. I've removed most of the packages that would obviously not affect network checksums, (php, perl, etc)

I would appreciate any hints at what packages I could downgrade to test my Packet Error issue. I tried downgrading the openssh packages. But still getting the packet error failure.

What version of VirtualBox is in use?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

There have been a number of reports of problems with 4.3.14 though mostly those are using Windows as a host. Perhaps you should try going back to a previous version or running one of the pre-release 4.3.15 versions. Since you are the only person I have yet seen reporting problems like this on CentOS 6.5, your VirtualBox would be my first suspect.

Yeah, My original thought too. I downgraded to VirtualBox 4.3.10 still getting the error. I have a thread open of VBox forums as well.

When I came across this difference between Centos 6.3 working and Centos 7 not working, I brought the focus here.

I have narrowed this down to the openssl package.

I have a Centos 6.3 VM on the same server as above. When I update the openssl package it breaks my ability to download large files. 1GB files fails every time, 100MB files fail 10% of the time.

The Centos 6.3-6.4 upgrade updates the OpenSSL package
from-> openssl-1.0.0-27.el.x86_64
to ---> openssl-1.0.1e-16.el6_5.15.x86_64
With OpenSSL 1.0.0 I can download 1Gb no problem.
With OpenSSL 1.0.0 I can download 1Gb no problem.

I've reported this to the VM Forums, and I'll see if I can check in with the SSL folks.
Any other suggestions?
