Should I buy Intel Core i5-1340P for CentOS?

Hi Folks,

Having bought a laptop recently with an AMD processor supposedly supported for linux and being sadly disappointed, I thought to shout out before doing the same again with an https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/cpu-intel_core_i5_1340p

Is that likely to run with the latest CentOS kernel?

I did just boot AlmaLinux 9 installer on system that has Core i5-13600 (Intel 13th Gen like the 1340P, but a desktop CPU).
That short run probably did not stress-test all features of the CPU, but at least it did not fail immediately.

I do have a system with AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D and AlmaLinux 9 runs fine on it. Nothing disappointing in it.


What do you mean by "CentOS"? CentOS Linux 8 is dead and CentOS Linux 7 will die by Midsummer. The CentOS Stream 8 will die by May. The CentOS Stream 9 will last longer and the only to perhaps support latest hardware, but CentOS Stream is not a stable production system like RHEL is. The above-mentioned AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux do continue the legacy of original CentOS project: to be compatible with RHEL, i.e. "good enough for production".


PS. A main purpose of CentOS Stream is that if you find an issue with it, then you report the issue to Red Hat in order for them to ensure that RHEL wont have that issue. Therefore, report the AMD-related bugs to Red Hat.

The AMD problems were with Ryzen 5 7640U w/ Radeon 760M Graphics - there are serious graphics problems causing unreliable wake from sleep in graphics mode: open bugs dating back to mid last year. Nightmare - constant anxiety unless I closed the machine down every time I left my desk for a pee (I exaggerate, a bit). Anyway, the problems with that have been resolved with a change of machine (and CPU manufacturer)...

CentOS: 9 stream. It may not be server stable like rhel, but is equally not as flaky as fedora... I run rocky on a v old laptop as a home server, so familiar with that - and used to run fedora for my daily driver, but I'm just too old now to care for all the bugs and constant changes. I'll check the bugs on the latest linux for centos and see if that tells me anything I should know.

I run Fedora 38 (now 39) on my Dell XPS13 Plus 9320 and that has an i5-1340P. I have not noticed any problems with it. And Fedora is rockl solid, not sure when you last tried it but I've been running it now since F32 and in that time I've had maybe 2 problems that were caused by Fedora and one of those was a mainline kernel problem that Fedora just happened to ship.

Thanks @TrevorH, I'm running f39 on this AMD kit (it's not quite yet gone, but I'm told the chargeback request has gone through). This bug is a bit of a blocker:

Just noticing your byline, I started with fc1 - I went to PureOS (Debian derivative) a few years ago and now I'm back here...
All that aside - it's good to know you're running an i5-1340P without issue.

I guess slightly OT but if anyone is browsing, trying to figure out the new rh Atlassian Jira issue tracker and entering 'Component: kernel Products: CentOS Stream' filters I get returned 'No issues were found to match your search'... Can it really be true that all linuxs running in CentOS Stream are lilly white?

I run AMD graphics on both my systems here, both F38 with kernel 6.7.5 and 6.7.6. I did have problems recently with crashes in amdgpu but that turned out to be due to my ATEN KVM having been reset to factory defaults and turning on a setting for MST. Once reset to SST the crashes have gone away but I don't think that's the same issue. The one you linked seems to be due to having a USB attached displayport connection - is yours doing that?

Yeah, there is an issue with the USB4 display port - I'm not sure how connected they are with white screen on resume - that usually happens on the internal screen only. Anyway, I'm over it - chargeback request accepted: new machine.
