Sony Vaio model VGN-NR260E Wifi Card/On Board Wifi Not Detected

Post by shsmith » 2019/05/29 23:01:46

Hi, I just installed CentOS 7 on my Sony Vaio model VGN-NR260E laptop. Wireless LAN shows no NIC installed, but this laptop has had other Linux distros on it and wireless worked fine. I have read through all the information I have but I can't find anything about specs or what wireless it has. running lspci -nn | grep -i net gives me this:

lspci -nn | grep -i net
02:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8039 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller [11ab:4353] (rev 15)
06:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Qualcomm Atheros AR242x / AR542x Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) [168c:001c] (rev 01)

Thanks in advance!

Run lsmod | grep ath9k and see if the module is loaded. If not then try modprobe ath9k (as root) and then check if you have a new interface listed in the output from ip link show
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Hi Trevor, thanks for replying. I ran lsmod | grep ath9k and nothing came up. Next I ran sudo modprobe ath9k and it showed nothing. Then I ran ip link show and got this:

[shsmith@localhost ~]$ ip link show
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: enp2s0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state DOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
link/ether 00:1a:80:26:02:b1 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
3: virbr0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state DOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
link/ether 52:54:00:db:44:d8 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
4: virbr0-nic: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast master virbr0 state DOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
link/ether 52:54:00:db:44:d8 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

Network settings still shows no wifi adapter.

After modprobe ath9k check the output from the dmesg command for errors from ath9k as it loads.

Do you get any output from grep -ir ath /etc/modprobe.d/
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I am not understanding what's going on then. Try doing it this way to make sure the steps are correct

Code: Select all

sudo su -
<your password>
lsmod | grep -i ath9k
modprobe -r ath9k
modprobe ath9k
dmesg | tail -20
You might also check /var/log/messages to make sure it doesn't have extra info in it

On a hunch I tried to completely re-install the OS. It failed completely, so I'm calling it a day
