RHEL7 to CentOS 7

Post by muttalmanithan » 2019/06/17 09:15:33

Hello All,

This is my first post in the centos community :D

I would like to migrate my RHEL 7 servers to centOS 7.

will there be any legal action/problem because of this from redhat? I just want to understand the legal terms before doing the upgrade.

Thanks.

https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/MigrationGuide is not up to date for CentOS 7 but should give you a bit of a headstart.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

CentOS project is trying to be 100% binary compatible with RHEL, thus the source provided by Red Hat is stripped from trademarks and other proprietary stuff and then compiled and synced into the mirrors.

In result , it is possible that RHEL to be migrated to CentOS and many have done it without issues.

I can only recommend you to check the link that Trevor has provided and also to consider using BOOM with LVM snapshots in order to easily revert in case of an issue.

P.S.: Red Hat are not like Oracle, but do not expect support for CentOS converted to RHEL.
